Fitting Suspension Spacers

The 31" tyres improve ground clearance under the axles, but the wheel wells looked a bit stuffed new tyres being 2" taller than standard. Also, a bit more of clearance under the sills would have been nice. With a new winch, winchbumper, track rod protector and steering guard, the front axle has in excess of 100kg extra weight to carry. Springs being relatively new, I opted for spacers under the spring seats.

Fitting an Electric Fan

A standard viscous fan works all the time, thus increasing fuel consumption, but only slightly. More of a problem is probably overcooling. There's lots of proprietary fans available on the accessory market. At a price. A visit to the breakers yard, and purchasing a thermostat gave a fairly cheap and simple setup.

Fire Extinguisher and Mag Lite Holder

Many offroad sites demand vehicles carrying a fireextinguisher to enter the area. For good reason. In fact it should be carried at any time. Close at hand for the driver. But where to fit the heavy lump?

Renewing Fuel Lift Pump

There is no practical way you can actually test if the fuel lift pump is working properly, and a faulty lift pump is a quite common cause of a tdi being low on performance. At Paddocks priced at around £15, it is worth swapping before flogging big money for injectors or overhauling an injection pump!

Renewing Fuel Hoses

The tdi is low on power, and due to excessive splicing of the supply line, I feared air into the fuel was the reason for the power loss. Thus all fuel lines were renewed - maybe just as much to rule out a cheap possible diagnose. I still guess the injectors are the main problem...

But finding a suitable winch and winchbumper isn't straightforward - there's very much to choose from - not all representing good engineering skills!

Change of 200tdi alternator

A charge-warning light coming on after pulling the key from ignition, and later coming on while driving warned of a failing alternator - due to dust or brushes or diodes. When a new one cost £58 at Paddocks, fixing the old unit isn't that much of an option.

Changing Engine Oil & Filter - the (Somewhat) Clean Way

Changing engine oil and filter on a 200tdi is a filthy business - no more. The Difflock drain plug takes the worst out of it, but the filter is still the bad old mess it's always been. Let's hope Difflock comes up with a solution to this before the garage gets even messier.

Custom Mudflap Panel

A rattling noise from the rear turned out to be a totally rotten mudflap panel.  New ones aren't especially expensive (at ~£20), but as I could not get hold of one when I needed it, I decided to custom make a new one out of 5mm thick rubber. A nice and cheap solution!
